My first love is Salamanders. But I do love how some other Legions look. The Dark Angels have always been interesting because they lean heavily into the Space Knight kinda vibe. I wanted to paint this model for a couple reasons. 1. I wanted to try to achieve my best single mini to date. 2. I wanted to learn how to shade / highlight black. 3. I wanted to work on shading and highlighting Metallics tmm Style.
This picture is from the Warhammer Community website. Very good visual reference but bland.
Now this is what I wish I could do!
Holy moly! That second example is what I am talking about. I’ll never be able to get close to that. But… let’s try! Next I gathered other visual references.
I started by priming the mini with Chaos Black primer. I then hit it with a zenithal highlight of NATO Black by Tamiya. Finally, I added a thinned down all over coat of Dark Angels green contrast paint. I thinned the DAG with contrast medium. I am not sure these small steps at the beginning will be visible later but let’s see.
Next I focused on the reds, blacks and metallics. This stage is just painting by numbers and filling in areas.
My next painting session was pretty productive. I sketched in the black, red and metallic highlights. This includes the cloak though it isn’t obvious yet. I also did a freehand checker pattern on the right vambrace that I copied from a visual reference.
